The Institute for Intelligent Systems (IIS) is an interdisciplinary research center at the University of Memphis. The mission of the IIS is to advance understanding of intelligent systems, including cognitive, social, biological, and artificial systems. Full time, tenured or tenure-track faculty at the University of Memphis may become full affiliate members of the IIS by agreeing to the following conditions. Only full affiliate members have access to financial resources.
Benefits for UofM Faculty:
- Use of IIS Pre-Award Specialist to assist with grant applications.
- Use of IIS Software Developers on existing and future projects.
- Can request IIS office infrastructure support for research-related activities
- Can request travel funds for IIS students
- Can request IIS research space
- Collaborative opportunities with IIS community partners IIS advocacy in university disputes
- Promotion on the IIS website and other IIS media outlets
Benefits for External Faculty:
- Develop and formalize research partnerships with UofM Faculty and Students
- Share your research and teaching expertise related to the IIS core issues (langauge, learning, artificial intelligence)
- Participate in IIS activities
Responsibilities for UofM Faculty:
- Name the IIS as research center on grants relevant to the IIS mission, thereby generating indirect cost recovery for the IIS.
- Participate regularly in the IIS Cognitive Science Seminar
- Participate regularly in the IIS Research Lightning Talks.
- Be available to advise, mentor, and interact with student advisees of IIS members
- Serve on IIS T&P Committees for IIS faculty lines, as appropriate
- Attend yearly IIS membership meetings
- Recruit students for the Cognitive Science Minor and Graduate Cognitive Science Certificate
Responsibilities for External Faculty:
- Participate in IIS activities such as the Cognitive Science Seminar and Research Lightning Talks
- Seek collaboration with IIS Core and Affiliate members on multi-disciplinary projects related to language, learning, and artificial intellilgence that lead to publications and externally-funded projects
- As appropriate, name the IIS as research center on grants relevant to the IIS mission
By submitting this form, the faculty member agrees to the above benefits and responsibilities. The faculty member can exit this agreement at any time by sending a letter to the Director. Membership may also lapse if faculty members fail to fulfill the above responsibilities; however, faculty will be notified by the Director and will have a semester to resume their good standing.
