This Practicum Application is for individuals seeking an Initial Teaching License for School Library Science K-12.
 
School Library Science Practicum Application   
 
Terms and Conditions: All application materials must be submitted through the Qualtrics form before the application deadline. No physical application materials will be accepted. No applications will be accepted after the deadline.

Please read the below information prior to applying for the Clinical Teaching Semester or Library Media Specialist Practicum.

Please submit this application by February 1 for Fall Clinical Teaching or October 1  for Spring Clinical Practicum. (Subject to Change).
 
Teacher candidates should be prepared to begin their Fall Clinical Teaching Semester anytime after the last week in July, and spring teacher candidates anytime after January 1st.
 

Requirements
  • Have an overall 3.0 graduate grade point average.
  • Must take and pass all required 5312 School Library Media exam prior to your clinical practicum semester.
  • Must send passing scores to the Office of Teacher Education (Code 1459) and the Tennessee Department of Education (Code 8190) prior to the first day of the clinical practicum semester.
  • Be fully admitted to the Teacher Education Program one semester before the clinical practicum semester.
  • Complete all coursework prior to the clinical practicum semester.
 
Clinical Teaching Documentation 
  • Proof of Professional Liability Insurance – You must submit proof of professional liability insurance coverage for the entire year. This may be obtained through STEAProfessional Educators of Tennessee, other approved professional organizations, or by a special rider added to a personal homeowner's policy. You will be asked to upload proof that you have professional liability insurance as a part of this application.
  • VECHS Waiver- Per the memo, Volunteer and Employee Criminal History (VECHS) Agreements, from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, in order for your TBI Criminal History Report to be released to our office, you must read, complete, and sign the VECHS Waiver Agreement and Statement.   • Memorandum of Understanding: This document is an explanation of the teacher candidate’s expected behavior during the placement. Please sign and upload the form to this application. Access the form here
  • Permission to Share Information: This document gives the University of Memphis permission to access your TVAAS data. Please sign and upload this form. Access this form here. 
 
**Background Check: If you have not had a background check conducted with the University of Memphis over the last five years, then you will need to follow the directions here to have a background check. Please note that the directions must be followed to ensure that the background checks are sent by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation to our office. 

Schedule
 

The Clinical Teaching Semester requires the commitment of one semester in a selected partner school. Teacher candidates must be present at their school for the full day and are required to participate in faculty meetings, PTO/PTA meetings, parent-teacher conferences, etc.
 
Placement
The University of Memphis Policy dictates that students are required to have diverse clinical experiences. All Clinical Teaching placements are made in accordance with this policy as well as in conjunction with identified Ready2Teach partner schools. Placements are generally made in a variety of West Tennessee public school systems. School partnerships change annually.

Registration Procedures 
Initial Licensure candidates must enroll in ICL 7808-Clinical Teaching and ICL 7993-Professional Seminar. Once your coursework has been reviewed, you will be contacted if you are missing anything that needs to be completed before beginning the Clinical Teaching Semester. You cannot register for Clinical Teaching courses until permits are issued. Once you have been approved and permits have been issued, you will be notified. You may not be notified until right before registration begins, but in some cases, it could be later.

Have you passed the 5312 Library Media Specialist Praxis exam? 
Are you currently working as a School Librarian on an Academic Permit, Waiver or Practitioner Job Embedded License?
Would you like to complete ICL 7808 Clinical Teaching at your current school?
Have you completed all coursework on your Master of Science in School Library Science (K-12) degree sheet with the exception of
ICL 7808 (Clinical Teaching) and/or ICL 7993 (Final Project)?
